The Essentials Of Gentle Discipline (and why you need it).
I get asked all the time about gentle discipline.
People tell me that they don’t really understand what it means so I thought I would tell you a bit more about it here.
Gentle Discipline is helping your children to learn skills and positive ways of being using calm, peaceful, sensitive and respectful methods.
Some of the methods that you may have heard of that come under the banner of gentle discipline are –
Time-In (being with your child while they process big emotions )
Empathic teaching (taking the opportunity to teach about empathy when children do something hurtful to another person)
Positive-Power consequences (supporting kids to be responsible for their choices in a way that shares the power with them)
Active Listening and Negotiation ( using listening as a tool to support your kids to express themselves and including them in negotiations about important matters)
There are many more, highly effective methods of gentle discipline too! Whatever your unique family situation, there are some great gentle discipline strategies out there that will meet your needs.
Learning, understanding and implementing gentle discipline methods in your family will;
Develop a culture of trust and respect in your family.
Encourage your kids to come to you with their thoughts and feelings.
Help you to understand your kids wackiest behaviours and what they are trying to communicate to you.
Reduce the severity of meltdowns, tantrums and angry outbursts for everyone in the family.
Help you to understand and manage power struggles for a happier life.
One of the lovely Mothers I finished working with recently told me that she was really proud of herself as she was seeing fewer angry outbursts, success in toilet training and a lot more cooperative gentle play during playdates for her 3 year old son – All of these amazing successes were from her switch to gentle discipline strategies! This stuff really works.
